Food poisoning symptoms
The food poisoning symptoms from the most common types of food poisioning generally start within 2 to 6 hours after eating the food responsible. That time may be longer (up to 36 hours) or shorter, depending on the toxin or organism responsible for the food poisoning. The possible symptoms of food poisoning include:
- Abdominal cramps
- Nausea and vomitting
- Diarrhea (possibly bloody)
- Fever and chills
- Headache
- Weakness (may be serious)
Food poisoning symptoms and tests
Your doctor will examine you for signs and symptoms of food poisoning, such as stomach problems and dehydration. Tests of your stool, vomit, blood, and any leftover food may identify the cause. Even if you have food poisoning and food poisoning symptoms, however, these tests may be unable to verify it.
Food poisoning symptoms don’t necessarily show up immediately after eating.The symptoms of food poisoning can show up as late as 36 hours later. The one symptom that is unique to food poisoning is bloody diarrhea- call a doctor immediately with this symptom. Left untreated some types of food poisioning can be fatal, so seek immediate medical attention especially if the symptoms are present in a child.
